AIA Eugene - UO Heritage Project Tour

  • Villard and University Halls Old Campus Lane Eugene, OR 97401 (map)

1 AIA LU|HSW Available

The University of Oregon Heritage Project is a renovation project focused on restoring and modernizing University Hall and Villard Hall, the university's oldest buildings. These buildings will undergo seismic upgrades, receive new and efficient utilities, improve accessibility, and feature modern classrooms, all while preserving their architectural grandeur.

Join AIA Oregon for a construction tour of the ongoing work on these historic buildings. Because there are a limited number of spaces, please register today to ensure your spot.

Jane Barker of Hennebery Eddy and UO Owner's Representative Tim Allenbaugh will co-lead the tour. We may also have a representative from the GC, Fortis Construction.

The tour is free for AIA Members and Allied Members.

$25 for non-members

This event is full - contact Kathy Wendland if you wish to be put on a waitlist.

The tour leads have communicated the following:

  • The tour attendance shall be capped at around 25 people, since this is a tight construction site.

  • Attendees need to wear long pants, sturdy closed-toed shoes, and bring PPE (hard hat, high-visibility vest, and eye protection). They have just a few sets of loaner PPE, but do not have enough for the entire group.

  • Here is a plan showing the meeting location (SE corner of University Hall).

  • The address of the site is 1109 Old Campus Lane, Eugene, Oregon 97403, but there is no parking lot at the project site.

  • PARKING: Parking is a challenge on campus (but Friday afternoons tend to be less crowded). Please arrive early enough to get parked and plan for a short walk to the site.

  • There is metered hourly parking through the city on the north part of Kincade St. and on 14th Ave (highlighted in yellow below).

  • Parking permits for certain U of O lots (shown in blue below) can be purchased in advance. Lot 6A, would need a B-west permit, and is the closest to the job site. Please visit this page on their website to purchase in advance.

  • If you have any parking questions, feel free to refer people to contact the Parking and Transportation Services front counter staff: (transportation@uoregon.edu or 541-345-5444).

Learning Objective 1:
Attendees will be able to describe the seismic upgrades made to the two buildings, including new interior concrete shear walls that will act like a building within a building, supporting the structure in event of an earthquake, and supporting the historic unreinforced masonry exteriors walls.

Learning Objective 2:
Attendees will be able to discuss the improved accessibility of the interiors including the replacement of fixed seating; the opening of classroom spaces, halls and bathrooms; the installing of larger, more modern elevators; as well as the modern ADA technology to be added to the classrooms.

Learning Objective 3:
Attendees will be able to identify the improved heating and cooling systems that will be installed to replace the previous systems of steam heat and manually opening windows for ventilation and support achieving LEED Gold Certification.

Learning Objective 4:
Attendees will be able to describe the programmatic updates to the buildings that will make them more welcoming and comfortable for student and faculty, such as gathering spaces, modern offices and faculty commons, and a new exterior courtyard.
